Don't
let termites eat
away
at your home's equity!
In Arizona we have a saying: you either have termites, had termites, or are going to get termites. Lake Havasu City’s wood framed buildings are especially susceptible to the damage caused by subterranean termites. People new to our area often do not understand that certain landscaping designs that were popular in their home state, can be welcoming to termites and deadly to the health of their Havasu home. It is important to recognize the definite don’ts when landscaping and decorating the perimeter of your home to prevent termites.
New Construction
Pre-Treating
During new construction the ground of the
building site will be chemically treated, to help protect the structure from
termites. Older structures (mid 1980’s and older), often have more
protection from termites, as they were sprayed with a pesticide that tends
to stay in the ground for a longer period. After time, water can wash
away the pesticide (and the termite protection), especially in newer
construction.
Landscaping to
Prevent Termites
Some pest control experts recommend an 18
inch space between the outside of the house and the landscaping. You should
not plant any bushes next to the building, as the watering of plants will
wash away your protection, and make the area vulnerable to termites. Wood
trellises (or any wood), should not be placed against your house. If
you were to install a trellis for your plants, and secured the structure to
the outside of the house, while planting the base of the trellis into the
ground, you are providing a highway for the termites to enter your home.
Never stack termite food - wood or lumber - next to the building. The
wood trellis may look pretty in a picture, but you want your property to be
the picture of health!
