Nut-Date Bread Recipe

1 cup chopped dates
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 tablespoons shortening
2 cups boiling water
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs (beaten)
4 cups flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup walnut
1 teaspoon salt 

Pour boiling water over dates, baking soda and shortening. Set aside and let cool. Sift together sugar, flour, baking powder and salt. Combine all of the ingredients, mix well. Spoon mixture into two buttered and floured loaf pans. Bake 50-55 minutes at 300º.
