Handprint Plaque

Of all the classic child craft ideas, I believe the plaster of Paris handprint is in the top ten. It is easy to make, great for a large group, and is always an appreciated gift by parent or grandparent. It is also a craft project that requires participation from an adult.

Materials Needed:
Heavy weight, deep dish paper plate, large enough for a handprint
Large paper clip
Ribbon
Plaster of Paris

Directions:
Bend the paper clip into a "S" shape. Place the paper clip along the outer edge of the plate (what will eventually be the top of the plaque), letting half of the clip hang over the brim and the other half of the clip in the plate. Eventually the half of the clip in the plate will be covered in plaster of Paris, while the other half will be used as a hanger.

Following the directions on the plaster of Paris, mix. Carefully pour into a plate until full. Hold the clip into place, so that it is embedded into the plaster. Have the child carefully make a hand print in the plaster, holding very still until it firms up. Gingerly remove hand.

The mixture will harden swiftly, so be prepared to move quickly! Allow to dry several days. Remove the plaster plaque from the plate. Fasten the ribbon in the clip for future hanging.
