We like to think
of it as our own, private, and spectacular fireworks show. The
annual WinterBlast, held each February in Lake Havasu City, Arizona,
has become one of those special things that makes Havasu, Havasu.
It is a firework extravaganza, surely to make all those other
firework shows humdrum in comparison.
The truth of the
matter, for us Havasuians, it really isn’t our show, per se. The
event is actually the Western Pyrotechnics Convention and Fireworks
Show. They are a non-profit group of firework professionals and
hobbyist who’ve joined together to promote their shared interest;
the safe and legal use of all types of fireworks. They have two
gatherings each year, and lucky for us in Havasu, one of those takes
place in our community.
The WinterBlast
first came to Havasu in 1990. At the time we were living on the
California side of the lake, directly across from Sara Park. I
recall sitting on our back patio, which overlooked Whipple Bay, as
we watched the spectacular show from the comforts of home. Of
course, we could only see those fireworks that made it over the
mountain top.
Since that time, Havasu has embraced the annual event. Those residents who live in areas with a clear view to Sara Park, often host outdoor parties for friends, where they can gather together and enjoy the show. Others will drive into neighborhoods with better views, and park along the road side and watch the show like an old fashioned drive-in. Of course, for those who want to be right there, seating is available at Sara Park.
Each year
WinterBlast attracts tourist and visitors into the community for a
weekend of fireworks and fun. So if you plan to be at the next
show, make your reservations early!
